Prof. Ishan Barman -- Photonics for Quantitative Biology and Medicine
   
Can we image the molecular pathology of cancers? We are recruiting doctoral students to drive our efforts in combining cutting edge optical and molecular spectroscopy measurements with numerical analysis for computational electrodynamics and frequent pattern mining. These approaches will be collectively used for chemically imaging cancers from the molecular to the tissue level with the ultimate goal of creating one-of-a-kind non-invasive pathophysiologic sensors.

Prof. Noah J. Cowan -- The Locomotion in Mechanical and Biological Systems (LIMBS) Lab
  
Why is it that a chess engine easily defeats any human grandmasters, but a child can move the pieces with greater agility than the best robots? The LIMBS lab approaches this question by applying dynamical systems and control theory to discover principles of how the brain and body work together to achieve agile movement, and we will be recruiting one or more PhD students to help.

Prof. Jaafar El-Awady - The Computational & Experimental Materials Engineering Laboratory
  
Our primary focus is to enhance the prediction of materials' mechanical failure and deformation, by moving from empirical, trial-and-error development techniques of materials, to a combination of state of the art multiscale computational methods and experimental techniques that can result in expediting the process of developing reliable materials with superior performance.

Prof. Kevin Hemker
  
Professor Hemker and his students are engaged in research to identify the underlying microstructural details that govern the mechanical response, interaction and performance of disparate material systems. General interests include: high temperature mechanical behavior, transmission electron microscopy, and micro-scale mechanical testing. Current research topics include: deformation behavior and grain growth in nanocrystalline materials and thin films, the characterization and modeling of multilayered thermal protection systems, optimization and development of architected materials  and materials for microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), and the development of materials for efficient and green energy production.

Prof. Joseph Katz - Laboratory for Experimental Fluid Dynamics (LEFD)  
  
Using state of the art techniques, some of them invented here, the research at LEFD characterize a broad range of single and multiphase flows, from boundary layers over complex terrain to turbulence and instabilities in turbomachines, from crude oil spills to cavitation, and from swimming of plankton to coastal flows.

Prof. Chen Li -- Terradynamics Lab - Movement Science at the Interface of Biology, Robotics, and Physics
  
Aero- and hydrodynamics have helped us understand how animals fly and swim and develop aerial and aquatic vehicles. By contrast, we know little about how animals move through complex terrain like forest floor and mountain boulders, and even the best robots struggle in building rubble or on loose Martian soil. We are creating terradynamics, analogous to aero- and hydrodynamics, to understand animal locomotion and improve robotic mobility in the real world.

At FPCL, we are engaged in a wide range of research projects at the intersection of fluid dynamics and computation. Current areas of interest include immersed boundary methods, vortex dominated flows, biomedical fluid dynamics, biological and bioinspired locomotion, active flow control, fluid-structure interaction and high-performance computing.

Fundamental science and engineering for extreme environments (particularly impact) in mechanics, materials, planetary science, and biology. The group emphasizes collaborative research efforts in discovery experiments and theoretical and computational modeling across a wide range of scales in each area. We believe that it is possible to have a great time AND be rigorous in the science.

Recruiting graduate students or postdocs interested in theory and modeling in mechanics of cells and tissues. The perspective student should have good mathematical background with exposure to either solid or fluid mechanics, or dynamical systems theory. Prof. Tamer Zaki - Flow Science and Engineering Group  
  
Seeking candidates for a graduate fellowship to study laminar-to-turbulence transition in the presence of environmental uncertainties.  The sporadic bursts of turbulence in an otherwise laminar flow is an intriguing phenomenon, and its sensitivity to the flow environment is both an important fundamental problem and an engineering modelling challenge.  Applicants must have a strong academic record and a keen interest in fluid dynamics and computational engineering.  The project is within Prof. Tamer Zaki’s wider research activity in the area of high-fidelity simulations of transitional and turbulent flows.
