ever has a time been so fascinating as today for geotechnical engineering: miniaturized sensors, ubiquitous mobile computing and big data analytics. In Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Professor WANG Yu-Hsing's state-of-the-art geotechnical laboratory marries all three forefront technologies to create an economical, real-time, long-term and highly scalable field monitoring system. We aspire to bring Terzaghi's "observation method" to the level of Google: let data speak for themselves in geotechnical engineering. With 13 such systems already running, a total of 32 GB of data is generated every day, and more will be deployed in the near future. We look for great bright minds who enjoy the delights and toils of big data and machine learning analytics, or the joys and sweats of hands-on tinkering of the latest tech gadgets.
