Most students go to university in the hopes of being able to qualify for a career after graduation.  A student can use the skills that he learns in his classes to excel in a future career after he graduates.  How can students begin to find a career?

Most universities help with this by having career fairs throughout the year.  During these huge fairs, recruiters from hundreds of companies, such as PepsiCo, Walmart, and Microsoft, come to campus to look for interested students.  These companies all set up tables and booths in a large space to attract interested students and provide information about their company and their opportunities.  Seeing all these companies in a row can be very intimidating for students so here are some tips for navigating a career fair:

1.  Do your research beforehand

A few weeks before the career fair, most universities will publish a list of the companies that will be attendance.  Students can look over this list and see which companies interest them and why by browsing the companies’ websites.  They can also see the types of positions and job openings the companies are looking to fill.  Students can prioritize which companies they want to speak with.  When they finally go to the career fair, they can impress recruiters with their knowledge and genuine interest in the recruiter’s company by asking meaningful questions.

2.  Dress to impress!

When it comes to looking for a job, first impressions are very important. The easiest way to look like a good candidate for hire is to dress in business attire.  For men, this is a black or navy suit with a matching jacket, a button down shirt with a tie, and black dress shoes.  For women, a similar suit with a skirt or pants, closed-toe dress shoes that are either “flats” or have a low heel, and hair and makeup that are neat but not too flashy.  Of course, no business outfit is complete without a professional portfolio to keep papers and lots of copies of your resume.

3.  Stay calm and confident

Career fairs can be overwhelming seem like a lot of pressure for a student.  There are so many people and so many companies!  Don’t be afraid to walk around the booths just looking for a few minutes to acclimate yourself to the environment.  Sit down and look over the map of the booths, circling the booths you want to make sure to visit as well as taking a moment to review your notes and your resume.  Recruiters want to meet you and get to know you so don’t be afraid to talk to them and express interest in their company.  Don’t forget to shake their hand, smile, and make eye contact when you introduce yourself and to remain engaged and interested when talking to them.
