The Audio Information Research (AIR) lab in the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) department at the University of Rochester is pleased to announce two PhD student openings starting from September 2014. Applications are now accepted online at http://www.ece.rochester.edu/graduate/grad_appn.html, and the application deadline is January 15, 2014.

At AIR lab, we conduct research in the emerging field of computer audition. We work on various projects such as audio source separation, automatic music transcription, sound event recognition, etc. Through these projects, we try to understand and model the fundamental properties of audio signals such as “polyphonic” and “dynamic”. On the music projects, we are actively collaborating with researchers in the university’s world-renowned Eastman School of Music.

Applicants are expected to have strong motivations and solid academic backgrounds. More specifically, applicants should show excellent skills in mathematics, computer programming, and academic writing. Applicants with research experiences in audio signal processing and machine learning are preferred. Music experiences will be a plus.

The ECE department is expanding the research and education in audio/music signal processing. Besides the PhD program, the department is currently offering an “MSEE with a concentration in Musical Acoustics and Signal Processing” master program and an “Audio and Music Engineering (AME)” undergraduate program. These programs are also welcoming applications.
