I am looking for highly motivated PhD students with a strong mathematical background to join my research group in Department of Electrical, Computer, and Systems Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. 大家一定听说过不少关于某某神级师兄某某神级师姐毕业后直接进名校当Assistant Professor的故事。是的,汪孟师姐就是这样一位神。汪孟师姐曾经是清华电机系第一名,康奈尔的PhD且GPA大于4.0(全科A或A+,而A+一般是教授认为学生在课上做出了远远超越课程要求的工作所给出的额外奖励),杜克大学的博士后。
汪孟师姐现在在RPI的Department of ECSE教Compressed Sensing and its Applications课程(我个人觉得是我在RPI上过的最有用的课程之一)。Compressed sensing是非常火的前沿课题,在很多学术领域和工业领域有着广泛而且深刻的应用,因此很容易拿到funding,系里的很多教授都想跟汪孟师姐合作,包括power方向的、控制方向的、机器人方向的、视觉与图像方向的、智能照明方向的,连我干(lao)爹(ban)这么远离学术的人物都想跟她合作了。汪孟师姐毕业不久,比我只大了几届,却已经在学术上做出了很有分量的成就(见附上的publication list,一大片的IEEE Transactions),算是学术新星。这样的在学生时代就展现才能然后立即拿到教职的年轻老师,不仅idea多多,思维敏捷,知识体系都紧随时代潮流,而且还能自己动手去做项目玩一号位carry,不像senior的大牛们早都不会写代码了只能五号位辅助。昨天我拿着满纸推算的公式去找汪孟师姐讨论我的一个idea,她10秒内就指出了我的一处理论错误,这就是传说中的瞬秒。如果能跟这样一位导师读PhD,肯定能大大地提升自身能力并发出很有影响力的paper。
综上,希望各位自动化的学弟学妹们广为扩散,认真考虑一下,汪孟老师真的很希望能招到清华自动化的学生(名声在外啊),但是也不限于清华也不限于自动化专业,只要有相关背景和较强能力者都可以考虑。我们学校虽小,但ECSE却是最强的招牌系之一,专排只有26纯粹是因为规模太小,但实际上每个教授都很强,比如我干(lao)爹(ban)就一堆头衔,个个都是要么不明觉厉要么扑通跪地,例如International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR)的chair,还有US Department of State的Jefferson Science Fellow(我也不知道是干嘛的,就是类似钢炼里国家炼金术师那种级别的)。而且我们学校跟工业界有很多合作,特别是在东部很受企业欢迎。像我这么挫都能去西门子和IBM实习,欧无缺找SRI的实习跟玩儿似的(准确说是SRI找欧无缺去实习),还有momo已经做了三个实习了,都快把加州当老家了,每年去GE实习的更是可以组团了。总之来我们学校跟汪孟读PhD绝壁不会后悔的,前途一片光明,无论想去学术界还是工业界发展。
