RMIT PhD Scholarships
School of Applied Sciences
1. ARC Centre of Excellence Nanoscale & BioPhotonics
PhD scholarships are available within the ARC Centre of Excellence for Nanoscale BioPhotonics (CNBP);RMIT University. You will be based at the Department of Physics and work on experimental and/or theoretical projects in the field of fluorescent nanoparticles for bioimaging and sensing applications. Our goal is to develop advanced optical materials that efficiently deliver and collect light to and from cells and molecules locally. This will allow us to non-invasively probe individual interacting biomolecules and living cells by using nanoparticle-based sensors.
How to apply
If you are interested, and a curious and motivated graduate in physics, chemistry or related discipline with a background in nanomaterials science and/or optics, please send your CV, and a short (one page) letter of motivation to:
Associate Professor Brant Gibson – Experimental program brant.gibson@rmit.edu.au
Professor Andrew Greentree – Theoretical program

2. Chiral plasmonic sensors
A PhD studentship is available to work with Professor Ewan Blanch on developing new chiral nanosensors. We have recently discovered a novel type of plasmonic nanosensor that can detect the stereochemistry of target molecules (Ostovarpour et al., Nature Chemistry 2015,doi:10.1038/nchem.2280) and we now seek to further explore the capabilities of this new analytical technique for biology and medicine. In this project the student will become an expert in a range of advanced spectroscopic and nanophotonics technologies. Prior experience in optical spectroscopy (Raman or infrared), nanoparticle preparation or quantum mechanical modelling would be an advantage but are not essential as training will be provided. This project involves collaboration with colleagues in the UK and Prague, and the student will be expected to spend some time in these partner labs as well as present their work at conferences.

3. Spintronic and opto-electronics devices based on novel quantum materials
Applications are now open for PhD scholarships, for commencement in Jan 2016 or by negotiation. The School of Applied Sciences at RMIT University is offering a PhD Scholarship to a candidate interested in pursuing research in novel devices based on Topological Insulators and 2D semiconductors. The student will involve in the growth of high quality nanostructure materials, device fabrication, low temperature electron and spin transport measurements, and opto-electronic measurements. Candidates with strong physics and material background are preferred.
