Several RA positions are available for PhD study of fluid mechanics in
Professor Lian Shen’s research group at University of Minnesota (UMN).
Prof. Shen’s group conducts computational and theoretical studies of fluid
dynamics in areas including DNS and LES of turbulence, boundary layers,
waves, hydrodynamics, multiphase and/or free-surface flows, microscale
flows, and high-performance scientific computing.Theresearch is well-funded,
with supports from National Science Foundation, Office of Naval Research,
Department of Energy, industry, etc. The projects originate from a wide
range of applications, such as environmental sciences, renewable energy
(including wind energy and wave energy), physical oceanography, and ocean
engineering; however, fundamental mechanism of fluid dynamics is always a
major focus of the research in Prof. Shen’s group.
Prof. Shen’s group is affiliated with both Mechanical Engineering
Department and St. Anthony Falls Laboratory at UMN, which is located in the
Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area in a state with over 10,000 beautiful
lakes. The world ranking of UMN is 29, 30, and 46, respectively, according
to US News & World Reports, Center for World-Class Universities at SJTU, and
Times Higher Education. Despite its moderate size, the Mechanical
Engineering of UMN is rankedthe 16th by US News & World Reports and the 7th
by National Research Council nationally. The St. Anthony Falls Lab, of
which Prof. Shen is the Associate Director overseeing its research, is a
fluid mechanics institute with over 50 faculty and staff members. The lab
possesses excellent computational and experimental facilities, has been a
center for multidisciplinary fluid mechanics research, and is particularly
strong in the study of environment, energy, and health related fluid flows.
Interested students are welcome to submit their applications to Department
of Mechanical Engineering of UMN before the deadline of December 15th. The
PhD application to the Mechanical Engineering Department is very
competitive. Successful applicants are expected to have a strong academic
background, be highly motivated, andhave strong interests in performing top-
quality research and publishing in top-tier journals. Students interested
in joining Prof. Lian Shen’s group are welcome to contact him at
shen@umn.edu. Sending a copy of CV and transcript in the email will be
helpful.
