HOW TO APPLY FOR THE DEAN'S INTERNATIONAL POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIPS

Applications close 31 October 2014
How to apply
Applying for entry into the PhD program in semester two 2015 and applying for The Dean’s International Postgraduate Research Scholarship are two separate processes. Applicants must complete both stages as follows:
Stage 1: Find a supervisor
For full details on applying for admission to the University of Sydney, please read the Future Students pages carefully.
  • Securing a supervisor
Before lodging a PhD application, candidates are required to make contact with a potential academic supervisor, or the relevant postgraduate research advisor, and discuss their proposed research project. PhD candidates can search for a potential academic supervisor using the Research Supervisor Connect (RSC) database or contact the Science Information Helpline for assistance. Contact the potential supervisor(s) you have identified to discuss your research interest. Once you have secured a supervisor for your proposed research, you are ready to progress your application.
  • Prepare a research proposal
Once you have initiated discussions with an academic contact, you should prepare an initial research proposal.
  • Revise and finalise your research proposal
In conjunction with your academic contact(s), refine your research proposal ready for submission of your formal application.
  • Identify and contact two academic referees
To support your application, we will need to receive references from two academic referees who are familiar with your previous academic qualifications/achievements. Ensure they are available and willing to complete a reference for you, and acquire their correct and current contact details.
  • Complete the application form
The Postgraduate Research Application form contains detailed instructions about how to fill it in. Make sure you follow these instructions precisely. To ensure that your application is complete and can be processed as quickly as possible, please ensure you have included all of the required supporting documentation.
  • Submit your application
Once you have secured a supervisor and prepared your research proposal, you are ready to submit your application. All applications for Doctor of Philosophy (Science) should be lodged online.
If you have completed steps 1-6 as above, and have experienced problems with your online application for admission to the degree please contact theInternational Student Office.

The average processing time for PhD applications, once the University receives a complete application, is six weeks. Some applications may take longer to process, particularly where insufficient documentation has been provided.
