“Mathematical modelling of multi-scale control mechanisms for skin barrier homeostasis”
We invite applications for a PhD studentship in the Department of Bioengineering at Imperial College London. A stipend and home/EU fees for 3 years will be awarded to the successful candidate. Overseas applicants can apply but have to show the evidence that the difference between the overseas fees and home/EU fees can be covered by other funding.
This project aims to identify fundamental regulatory mechanisms of skin barrier homeostasis, which is the result of regulations across different spatio-temporal scales, including differentiation, cornification, protein interactions and gene regulation. The PhD Student will develop mathematical tools and frameworks, based on deep understanding of biology behind combined with systems and control perspective, to provide a unified and
Practically applicable mechanistic model to elucidate how the deregulation of the mechanisms leads to skin disease such as atopic dermatitis. This is a collaborative project with RIKEN IMS Centre for Integrative Medical Sciences.

Applicants should have a high calibre Masters degree (or equivalent qualification) in a relevant area to undertake the mathematical modelling part of this project. Strong biological background is desired. Experience in modelling and analysis of biological systems and expertise in modelling with differential equations and numerical methods are preferable. We look for highly motivated applicants with excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills and enthusiasm for exposure to a diversity of scientific
projects. The PhD will involve close interactions with biological collaborators.
