Recruit a PhD student
Acoustics research group of Professor Mak Cheuk-ming,

Requirements for PhD application:
The applicant can start PhD study in acoustics in April - Aug 2015. He/She will be required to study duct acoustics using HRs array. He/She needs to have a master degree and a bachelor degree. A three-year student stipend will be provided. This student needs to have a master degree in 2015 or before (before the start of the PhD study) and must satisfy our university English requirement below. IF he/she is recruited, he/she will have a financial support (a studentship of around HKD14300 per month. English Language Requirement
*An overall score of at least 6.5 (with score for the writing component at 6.0 or above) in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or
*For TOEFL, 575 or above in paper-based test (with a score of at least 4 out of 6 in the Test of Written English); or 90 or above in internet-based test (with a writing score of 23 or above). Alternatively, consideration will be given to acceptable scores in other internationally-recognised public examinations, such as the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT).
All English language test scores are considered valid for five years after the date of the test.

Introduction of the supervisor professor
Professor Mak Cheuk Ming received his Bachelor degree in Building Services and Environmental Engineering and his Doctor of Philosophy (in Acoustics) from the University of Liverpool and received his Postgraduate Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control from the Institute of Acoustics of United Kingdom.  

His research interests include acoustics, noise and vibration, and the application of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to the studies of building and urban environments. He has committed to research works for over 20 years and has produced over 100 publications. He is the Fellow of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). He was the Chairman of the Hong Kong Institute of Acoustics (HKIOA) from 2006 to 2008 and served the HKIOA executive committee from 2001 to 2012. He was the Building Services Discipline Advisory Panel Member of HKIE from 2009 to 2011. He was the member of Training Review Sub-committee (Group II) of HKIE from 2009 to 2011 and the member of Education & Examinations Committee of HKIE from 2010 to 2011. He was the PolyU Student Branch Advisor of the Hong Kong Chapter of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-conditioning Engineers from 2008 to 2010.
