英国谢菲尔德大学的一个博士全奖的机会,招一个有生物背景的学生。
期间有机会去牛津大学交换。
Synthetic biology is a subject that cuts across scientific and engineering disciplines. We are looking for a talent PhD candidate for developing exciting new concept of synthetic biology.
This project addresses key challenges in the area of synthetic biology, namely that gene circuitry is unpredictable, cell complexity is unwieldy, and variability ‘crashes the system? We propose to develop SimCells as simplified and robust building blocks and to develop complex yet controllable systems based on a SimCell community. The key novelty is that a SimCell is a new type of cell system, taking advantage of the machinery of living cells on the one hand, and of the safe, controllable and predictable performance of cell-free in-vitro gene expression system on the other. SimCells will be developed as user-oriented ‘mini-robots? and miniature cell factories, with novel and controllable functions. For example, potentially anyone will be able to purchase SimCells ‘off the shelf? use them as building blocks and make novel devices using a 3-D cell printer. The application of SimCells overarches several strategic priorities including healthcare, bioprocessing & manufacturing, environment & bioremediation, industrial biotechnology, and biocomputing. This project will demonstrate that SimCells can be used as a platform for many applications, and will show the impact of synthetic biology on the bioeconomy.
The PhD candidate can potentially join Oxford University synthetic
biology training program.
