Opportunities for PhD Candidates

Prof. Richard SO is recruiting THREE PhD candidates to start in September 2014 on the following projects:   

1.    Identifying cortical mechanism behind visually induced motion sickness – a function brain study
2.    Predicting auditory alarm perception in the presence of loud noise – a biologically inspired afferent suppression model  
3.    Active prevention of motion sickness – a design, development and empirical evaluation study

All candidates should have strong background in signal processing, basic electronics and computing skill. Interest in human science is a must. Proven records on statistical analyses are also essential. Experience with Matlab will be an advantage.   

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology ranked No.1 in QS Asia's Top 300 Universities (2011-2013) and No.34 in the QS World's Top 700 Universities (2013) ranking.   

Professor Richard H.Y. So is a Professor in Human Factors and Bio-medical Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. An expert in spatial vision, Professor So has published extensively on topics such as cybersickness and the mechanisms involved in visually induced motion sickness. Besides spatial vision, his research in spatial audio also led to many publications and a Intellegual Property sold to an International audio IC company. In 2006, he delivered the keynote speech at the annual meeting of the Vision Society of Japan. In 2012, he delivered the opening keynote speech at the first Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of Philippines Conference. Professor So earned his bachelor’s degree in Electronics Engineering from the University of Southampton. He obtained his PhD degree in Engineering Sciences at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) under the sponsorship from the Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

Prof. So was elected to be the co-Editor-in-Chief for DISPLAYS and he also served as associate editors for Applied Ergonomics and Ergonomics. In 2010, he was elected as a Fellow of the Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors. Professor So served on the drafting committee of the Inter-national Workshop Agreement 3 (IWA3) on image safety. He currently serves on the technical committees (TC1-67) for the Commission Internationale de L’eclairage (CIE) and the expert panel for ISO working group on image safety.
