什么是套磁？为了什么?
现在套磁这个词本身已经被滥用了，以至于讲到套磁很多申请人都分不清楚是套小秘套学生还是套教授。其实大家说“套磁”的意思就是通过和教授、小秘以及学生的联系，获得专业的咨询，筛选最适合自己的学校，定位自己最适合的专业和方向，增加录取的几率。


百度百科的定义（可参考）：“套磁”专指留学申请者和申请学校的有关教授通过Email联系，并通过联系达到增加自己被录取和获得奖学金的机会。通常来说，使用“套磁”申请博士要比申请硕士有用，因为硕士是没有导师带的；申请理工科比文科有用，因为对于理工科的同学，你所拿到的奖学金其实就是教授的研究经费的一部分，因此与其说是学校给你发奖学金不如说是教授给你发。而对于文科，情况完全不同，研究经费一般由院系决定，教授可以起到的作用很有限。http://baike.baidu.com/view/1385927.htm
因此建议“套”这个说法仅用在和导师的联系上。

2、问哪些问题？
理论上，研究生院的小秘就是负责回答申请人疑问的。因此什么问题都可以问。但是有些问题是已经被问烂了的，会放在研究生院或者系申请网页的FAQ里。建议大家先去这个栏目了解情况，否则小秘不一定会回复你的邮件。





例子：
Dear Mr. S,

Hi! My name is JoJo and I am from CCC. I am considering apply for the PhD program of AAA at XXX University.

I am very interested in the courses provided in your program. However, on the Admissions webpage I found:For international applicants- copy of GRE score, copy of TOEFL score (105 IBT). I wonder if 105 is the minimum requirement for applicants. Am I still eligible if my got 103 in TOEFL iBT with 24 in speaking? My revised-GRE score is 57% in the Verbal, 94% in Quantitative and 30% in Analytical Writing. I had three research experience, published two papers and two Chinese patents. 二、询问在校生
1、怎样获得在校生的联系方式
a.看系里的网页或者教授的网页。current student/ people/member名录。 查找名字和联系方式，碰运气。
b.问小秘是否可以和学生取得联系,以便更了解作为中国学生他们怎么看这个项目.一般提供的是活跃并且一定会回答你的邮件的学生联系方式。因为他们一定是会征求过意见的。
c. CSSA论坛或者QQ群
d. 学长学姐校友或推荐

2、问什么问题？
关于录取的问题：他们当时是怎么录取的？是否愿意传授tips？ GT对于录取是否重要。
在学校的学习生活：课程学什么，生活是否便利，是否有休闲活动。
导师：指导方式，组里气氛，学生就业情况，等等。

1、I am interested in the research topics in your lab, especially the YYY. What do you think about the facilities and doctoral training in XXXX?

2、What do you think about competition regarding application for the PhD program in XXX. I found statistics stating that successful applicants have an average GPA at 3.5, GRE around 70% in the verbal section. I got 57% in the verbal section in GRE, so I am a bit worried.

1、怎么获得教授的联系方式
主要途径：系里faculty list，教授的网页，以通讯作者发表的论文
1）教授的网页看什么
CV。教育和工作经历。研究研究项目有哪些，是否有自己感兴趣的。文章/专利列表。
论文题目是否和研究项目介绍相关，文章内容，档次（SCI点数，citation，H-factor）
Google一下教授最新的文章在做什么，wikipedia查不明白的部分。

2）教授的论文怎么看
没有基础：看懂这个领域的综述 reviews Annual Review Nature review等
有一些基础：看研究型论文。研究意义，怎么做的，用了什么手段，证明/发现了什么（理科）/做到了什么效果（工科）？创新在哪里？在新的发现或者手段没有出来前，至少你证明/发现的这个是目前最可靠的/最好的。

3）套磁需要哪些准备
a、对教授的研究比较熟，写好Email稿子，多修改。一次只提容易回答的或者简单的一两个问题。但必须是教授本人才能回答的，而不是网上简单就能找到的。
b、想和教授交流什么？学术交流没这么简单/本科生不期望能站到和教授一样高的角度。所以一开始只求让他认识你，对你有个好印象。
c、邮件不如电话，电话不如见面。
d、误区：套磁=录取？不少前辈经验说套上教授才拿到offer的。所以把经历都放在挖空心思套教授上，是不是套上教授就能保证录取了呢？拿到教授的口头offer是不是就保险了呢？
套上教授却没被录取的例子比比皆是。即使系里发录取了，还后研院审核不过关收回offer的例子。没有拿到正式I20之前都不能完全放松。

I am interested in your lab. I read papers of yours and was attracted by your fantastic work done on AAA. My research experiences as you could find in my CV(see below) involved in AAA and BBB. I have a great interest concerning AAA. I also have a huge interest in taking the advantages of knowledge based on BBB to construct a better system for AAA. Your group seems to be the best fit for my interests.

I am applying for the 2013fall PhD program at XXX. I would like to explore an opportunity working in your lab once I was admitted. So I wonder if you are taking new students from the YYY program next year ?

Tips: CV不以附件的形式发而是直接贴在邮件后面。这样做有很多好处，比如，相对没那么容易被当作病毒扔到垃圾箱，教授不需要下载和保存就能看到关键信息。
